last meeting before the pitch - meeting minutes

we decided on doing three short videos with three subjects as a trilogy.
we decided to have one teenager, one mid-aged woman and a child as our three subjects.

we raised questions:
who are going to provide us with the performers' list ?
can we use archive footage?
will Brighton Fringe Office help us with getting location permissions?

research on fast paced motion picture

⇨ Short, doodle-y type animations that play with the live-action footage throughout the videos
⇨ Using the style represented on the Fringe website and logo
⇨ Goal: to tailor the video more towards the Fringe brand and give it a unique, quirky feel

This is fun.
Take a look if you have time.
It's a fast-paced, nicely done video of Portland and the surrounding area from Travel Portland.
If you've lived here for long, you probably won't see too much that you haven't seen before, but it's always nice to see things through new eyes, or in this case, through a new lens.
Hope you enjoy.  And by the way, in this Portland, it never rains.

the fast-paced video we were thinking about doing was functioning well with the funny effects.

I had anticipated meeting Brighton Festival’s latest guest director in a quiet corner of the Brighton Dome foyer. But Hofesh Shechter has a better idea. “This is where you can really feel at home,” he grins, as I emerge, blinking, onto the stage of the (thankfully deserted) Concert Hall.

CURATORS' PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY

To those who have expressed concerns about our professional development opportunity for curators,

Thank you for your comments and for your input into this process. This is a professional development opportunity, with the participants being offered a series of free workshops teamed with hands-on experience of the curatorial process. Rather than save Brighton Photo Fringe money, we have had to raise funds in this very difficult environment, to put this project on. The exhibition does have a curator, who is leading the programme of talks and workshops offered to the participant emerging curators, and also technical staff to do the work of putting up the exhibition. The participants are being guided through a process and we will do our very best to make sure that it is a valuable and enriching experience for them.

To let you know a little more about the organisation, we are a group of volunteers making up the Board of Trustees. We have no permanent paid staff, as funding for this is not available. We do run a volunteer scheme when we feel it is appropriate, but always do our best to move the people who work with us into paid employment with us or other organisations. We do have a track record of success with this.

I hope this has addressed your concerns.

Best wishes,
Gordon MacDonald
Chair of the Board of Trustees

THE MONTHLY MEET

Thanks to everyone who came along to the first meeting of 2013 last week. It was great to see some familiar faces and meet new people, and the ideas exchange we had was really inspiring!

The first thing to be put into action is a name change..."networking meetings" are no more...from now on we look forward to seeing you at our BPF Monthly Meet!

These Meets are for anyone interested in photography and lens-based media...or just wanting to know more and meet lovely people. You don't have to have ever exhibited during BPF, nor do you need to be planning to. We're rejuvenating our gatherings and for 2013 you can expect a regular monthly gathering, for photo-socialising, ideas exchange, talks, peer support and much more.

Full details of the next Monthly Meet to be released later this week: Keep up to date with Meet plans via our website, Facebook and Twitter.

CALLING ALL PREVIOUS BPF EXHIBITORS!

Have you exhibited during a festival before? Do you want an opportunity to present and discuss your work? Are you happy to answer questions about your experience as a BPF exhibitor? Then we want to hear from you!

We're planning to organise a couple of events at which people who've never exhibited at BPF (or possibly anywhere) can meet those who have and get an insight into the BPF experience. If you'd like to learn more about taking part as a past exhibitor, please contact jane@photofringe.org

INSIDE OUT: BPF COMMISSION ANTHONY LUVERA

We're excited to announce our new collaborative project working with people who've experienced homelessness led by photographer Anthony Luvera. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, Awards for All and in partnership with First Base, Inside Out will create on-going photographic facilities for Brighton's homeless population, in order to provide a means of self-expression, while creating forums for discussion and debate around the ethics of representation of those on the margins of society.

Inside Out will offer a platform to people who are homeless in Brighton & Hove. Through a series of practical workshops participants will be able to tell stories and document their lives. The images and stories created will be exhibited as part of Brighton Photo Fringe 2014. There will also be a launch event for the project as part of this year's BPF13.

BPF TURNS TEN: CELEBRATING A DECADE OF FRINGE ACTIVITY

This autumn we're planning to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this popular and internationally respected festival with an exciting range of exhibitions and events...and as ever, you're all invited! More details of what's on and how you can become involved will be released soon along with details of the Brighton Photo Fringe Open 13 in partnership with Phoenix Brighton.

Your Brighton Photo Fringe Needs You
BPF is in need of your help to realise the ambitious plans for the 10th anniversary events. Following an unsuccessful funding application to the Arts Council England, we're asking all those who have enjoyed and benefitted from BPF's programme to contribute to the forthcoming festival in order for us to continue our commitment to an open and inclusive event free to everyone. There is no suggested donation level, but please do what you can to support our work towards your Brighton Photo Fringe.

You can use the link here to visit our site where you will find a Donate Now button at the bottom of the home page. Your help and continued support is greatly appreciated. Alternatively, if you'd like to sponsor us or contribute in any other way then we'd love to hear from you: info@photofringe.org

We're also recruiting volunteers to help during our activity this November. Please email us to add your name to the list. Interviews will be carried out in early September.

Monthly Meets
Thanks to everyone who came along to our last Monthly Meet, and thanks in particular to Danny Wilson Memorial Award 2012 winner, Joan Alexander and Rebecca Drew who gave an intelligent and engaging discussion of Joan's work. We had a great turn out and it was lovely to see some familiar faces and welcome new people to BPF.

We're taking a short break from the Meets, but are planning to be back late in September as we prepare to celebrate our Big 10 Birthday! Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

A big THANK YOU to volunteers Elin Karlsson and Hannah Futers, who have done a brilliant job working with BPF recently, including organising Monthly Meets. Your time, skills and commitment are hugely appreciated.

Brighton Photo Fringe Director
Claire Lloyd, who was the Director of BPF for 18 months, has decided to move on to pursue personal projects, including returning to her practice as a film maker and setting up a cultural consultancy. The Board of Trustees would like to wish her every success for the future. BPF will be advertising for the position of Director of the organisation in the near future.

New Board Members
We are very happy to welcome new members to the BPF Board of Trustees. Joining current Trustees Gordon MacDonald (Chair), Rebecca Drew and Fergus Heron are: photographic artist Lisa Barnard, curator and arts manager Chloe Hoare, and former BPF Director Helen Cammock.
